Differential rotation and magnetic fields in stellar interiors

چکیده
The processes contributing to the evolution of an initially weak magnetic field in a differentially rotating star are reviewed. These include rotational smoothing (akin to convective expulsion) and a list of about 5 instabilities, among them magnetorotational instability, buoyancy instability, and pinch-type instabilities. The important effects of thermal and magnetic diffusion on these instabilities are analyzed in some detail. The first instability to set in is a pinch-type instability. It becomes important in modifying the field configuration before magnetic buoyancy-driven instabilities set in. The evolution of an initially strong field remains a more open question, including the old problem whether dynamically stable magnetic equilibria exist in stars.

Dynamo action by differential rotation in a stably stratified stellar interior
Magnetic fields can be created in stably stratified (non-convective) layers in a differentially rotating star. A magnetic instability in the toroidal field (wound up by differential rotation) replaces the role of convection in closing the field amplification loop. Tayler instability is likely to be the most relevant magnetic instability. A dynamo model is developed from these ingredients, and a...
متن کاملDynamo Action in Fully Convective Low-Mass Stars
Recent observations indicate that fully convective stars can effectively build magnetic fields without the aid of a tachocline of shear, that those fields can possess large-scale components, and that they may sense the effects of rotation. Motivated by these puzzles, we present global threedimensional simulations of convection and dynamo action in the interiors of fully convective Mdwarfs of 0....
متن کاملStellar evolution with rotation and magnetic fields: I. The relative importance of rotational and magnetic effects
We compare the current effects of rotation in stellar evolution to those of the magnetic field created by the Tayler instability. In stellar regions, where magnetic field can be generated by the dynamo due to differential rotation (Spruit 2002), we find that the growth rate of the magnetic instability is much faster than for the thermal instability. Thus, meridional circulation is negligible wi...
متن کاملStellar evolution with rotation and magnetic fields: II: General equations for the transport by Tayler–Spruit dynamo
We further develop the Tayler–Spruit dynamo theory, based on the most efficient instability for generating magnetic fields in radiative layers of differentially rotating stars. We avoid the simplifying assumptions that either the μ– or the T–gradient dominates, but we treat the general case and we also account for the nonadiabatic effects, which favour the growth of the magnetic field. The gene...
متن کاملDifferential rotation in giant planets maintained by density-stratified turbulent convection
The zonal winds on the surfaces of giant planets vary with latitude. Jupiter and Saturn, for example, have several bands of alternating eastward (prograde) and westward (retrograde) jets relative to the angular velocity of their global magnetic fields. These surface wind profiles are likely manifestations of the variations in depth and latitude of angular velocity deep within the liquid interio...
